CWG Library Item No. 44

This book is an invaluable guide to the identification of tables, for amateurs, collectors and furniture historians. It is a visual guide to the development of furniture from the earliest times to the present day, and an essential reference work for anyone working with or interested in the forms and history of western furniture.
Tables in all their diversity of form and function are represented, from a French Henri II center table of around 1580 to Solomon's Table designed by Danny Lane in 1988. In between there are illustrations and analysis of an English dining table and an Italian marble-topped side table from the l7th century, a Louis XV gilt iron console table and an American Chippendale tea table from the 18th century, a German neo-Classical writing table and a Duncan Phyfe card table from the 19th century, a trapezoidal coffee table by Alberto Giacometti and low table by Andrée Putman from the 20th century. Each of these pieces, and many more, are commented on in detail, and together with an introduction to each century, they flesh out the history of these essential pieces of furniture with so many uses. At the same time they provide a window on to the fascinating history of European and American furniture.
An Encyclopedia of Tables will give an insight into the development of furniture and tables through the authoritative and lively text accompanied by more than 200 full-color illustrations of pieces from all over the world.
is a unique combination of design history and practical reference for the collector.
