CWG Library Item No. 9

Few woodworkers like to spend much time sanding and planing, yet these chores are essential to almost every woodworking project. Without accurate, careful planing and jointing, you cannot cut a board true and expect it to stay that way. And without a working knowledge of sanders and abrasives, you cannot prepare a wooden surface for a fine finish. In Sanding and Planing, author/craftsman Nick Engler explores all major surfacing tools - jointers, planers, sanders, scrapers, hand planes, and files - showing when and how to use them to get the results you want quickly and effectively. Discover how to make perfectly flat, straight boards from rough lumber and how to create square stock for table legs and turnings. Learn about abrasives and sanders, and how to match the materials and the machines to the sanding job. See how to sand any surface - no matter how complex - with a minimum of effort, and find out how to save sanding time by using scrapers, hand planes, and files when you can. Over 200 drawings and photographs clearly show how to perform these procedures and many more like them. There are also plenty of shop-tested tips, ingenious jigs and fixtures, useful charts, and inside information to help you put a smooth, true surface on your work. More important, Sanding and Planing shows you practical applications for much of this valuable information, as well as how to make your own surfacing tools. There are complete plans and instructions for these useful projects:
• A thickness sander is the perfect machine for thicknessing figured or slender stock. It also provides an accurate, inexpensive substitute for a planer if you don’t have a lot of planing to do. This shop-made tool can handle lumber up to 4 inches thick and 16 inches wide.
• A disc-and-drum sander combines two indispensable sanding accessories in a single machine. This combination allows you to sand flat, convex, and concave surfaces with precision.
• A scraper plane combines the advantages of a hand plane and a cabinet scraper. This easy-to-build, easy-to-use hand tool will scrape a perfectly flat surface in any kind of wood.
• A sandpaper dispenser will dispense rolls of abrasives, automatically measuring and cutting the sandpaper to the proper length.
